Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disease characterized by an intense inflammatory reaction in the skin and a decreased skin barrier function. In our department we have focused our research on the inflammatory mediators produced in the skin and their interaction with cells of the immune system and the skin barrier function. To this purpose we have set up a human in vitro 3D model of the skin in which we can study the structural proteins of the skin barrier and how they are affected by inflammation. Furthermore we are focused on the use of biological parameters as biomarkers for subgroups of atopic dermatitis and predictors of treatment results. Our research tools also include ELISA, PCR, and FACS analyses. Further, we are also focused on epidemiological and clinical studies in atopic dermatitis.
